India is in the middle of a demographic transition. This provides a window of opportunity towards faster economic growth. India has already begun to get the dividend. There is an urgency to take appropriate policy measures to reap the demographic dividend.

Key interventions of UNFPA in India:

Facilitating evidence-based policy dialogue on demographic dividend: UNFPA has been pioneering the generation of evidence and facilitating policy dialogue on issues related to the demographic dividend and population ageing in India with policymakers at the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI Aayog) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare including National Transfer Accounts (NTA).

Strengthening data systems to monitor Sustainable Development Goals: UNFPA supported the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation to track SDG indicators. UNFPA has also undertaken district-level population projections in its four focused states, providing disaggregated age-sex structure for programme planning and monitoring at the local levels.

Building Capacity of Census Enumerators: UNFPA supported the Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI) and Census Commissioner in developing e-learning modules and mobile applications in English and 17 Indian languages as technical resource for 3 million census enumerators and their supervisors.

Influencing Population Narratives: UNFPA engaged with print and electronic media to influence key narratives on the positive aspects of population dynamics as the world's population reaches 8 billion and India is set to become the most populous country in 2023.

Strengthening South-South Collaboration: As part of the South-South Triangular Cooperation, UNFPA facilitated a study visit for the officials of the National Statistics Bureau and Census, Republic of Moldova, for orientation on Census, economic surveys, use of official statistics, data quality assurance, and data systems for international migrants.
