This report by UNFPA India, Victoria University, and the Burnet Institute shows how Bihar can transform its future by supporting its young girls. It proves that when the state invests in girls' education and health, the entire economy grows richer and stronger. Currently, about 3,50,000 child marriages happen every year in Bihar, often leading to early pregnancies that are dangerous for young mothers and their babies.
These challenges hold back the state’s progress because many girls are forced to drop out of school before they can reach their full potential. The report offers a clear plan to change this by spending on things that truly work, such as life skills training, community programs, free bicycles, and cash help for school.
By scaling up these programs, Bihar can avert 6 million child marriages and prevent 14.6 million adolescent pregnancies by 2050. This shift would also help an additional 5.1 million girls stay in school to finish their education. Financially, the plan is highly effective, as every rupee the state spends on these programs will return over 7 rupees in economic benefits. Investing $8.2 billion now will create a massive $59.3 billion in total wealth for the state by the year 2050. This report is an urgent call for everyone to work together to ensure every girl in Bihar has the chance to learn, grow, and succeed.
