Young people are leading the way on global concerns from climate change to gender equality, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic. They have the right to make choices about their bodies and lives.

Yet it’s true that they cannot always realize their rights. UNFPA pledges to do everything we can to act with young people on the challenges they face. We stand with them in their fight to claim the world they imagine - and deserve.

Domestic violence is a violation of human rights, denying women equality, security, dignity, self-worth, and their right to enjoy fundamental freedoms.

The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA), instituted in 2005, is a legislation aimed at protecting women from violence in domestic relationships.

Bodily autonomy is the power and agency to make choices about your body without fear of violence or having someone else decide for you.

A serious lack of bodily autonomy has had far-reaching implications much beyond the profound harm to individual women and girls that include potentially depressing economic productivity, undercutting skills, and extra costs to health care and judicial systems.

Nearly half the women from 57 developing countries do not have the right to decide regarding their bodies including using contraception, seeking health care, or even on their sexuality.

Every day, tens of thousands of girls have their health, rights and futures stolen. Some are subjected to female genital mutilation. Some are forced into “marriages” as children, and still others are neglected or starved, simply because they are female.

At least 19 harmful practices, ranging from dowry related violence to crimes in the name of so-called honour, are considered human rights violations. The Report focuses on the three most prevalent forms: child marriage, son preference and Gender Biased Sex Selection (GBSS), and female genital mutilation (FGM).

While harmful practices may vary widely, they are all violations of the rights of women and girls.
