The first batch of 25 girls from various slums of Bhubaneswar successfully completed the 10 days self-defence training module, at city-based Utkal Karate School recently. The training was imparted as part of Socially Smart Bhubaneswar initiative of Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), in collaboration with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and being implemented by Humara Bachpan NGO.
The girls were feliciated by Mayor Anant Narayan Jena along with Dr Deepa Prasad, state coordinator, UNFPA, Mr. Bijaya Kumar Swain, General Manager (Operation), BSCL, Mr. Santosh Kumar Mishra, OSD, BSCL, Mr. Debasis Sit, Local councilor, Ms. Haripriya Samantray, Lawyer, State Legal Aid cell
Mayor Jena, during his address at the felicitation ceremony, encourage girls to be brave and stated,“The initiatives which have been undertaken in 24 slums in UNFPA-BSCL partnership need to be scaled up in other slums of Bhubaneswar.”
Dr. Deepa Prasad, UNFPA added, “Empowering girls need multiple approaches and during the past one year of partnership several initiatives were taken up. One of them is training girls in self-defense; this truly boosts their confidence”
