A one-day inter-departmental dialogue on the prevention of gender-based violence and effective law enforcement measures concluded at the Rajasthan Police Academy (RPA), organised jointly by the Rajasthan Police and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The event focused on transformative solutions and effective implementation to address harmful gender practices. The program also saw the release of informative materials, including a booklet on addressing gender-based violence through technology and a knowledge management product. Additionally, short films highlighting campaigns like Beta-Beti Ek Saman, Dono Ko Mile Avsar Saman, PCPNDT, and Community Policing were screened, emphasising the need for social change.
Anti Corruption Bureau DG, Dr Ravi Prakash Meharda, lauded UNFPA on its 50th anniversary in India and emphasised the significance of the seminar, which brought together officials from the police, academic scholars, and departments involved in gender related issues. He stressed the importance of cultural values rooted in India's traditions, such as the reverence for women, and advocated for mutual coordination to combat gender-based violence. He also pointed out the increasing role of digital awareness in preventing the misuse of technology in gender violence cases.
UNFPA's India Representative, Andrea M. Wojnar, praised the Rajasthan Police for their proactive approach in addressing gender-sensitive issues. She emphasised that despite economic inequalities, societal change is possible through education and a shift in public mindset. Wojnar called for responsible police responses to support gender equality and women empowerment.
ADG Ashok Rathod highlighted the importance of breaking traditional gender stereotypes and underscored the need for awareness in society to fight gender disparity. He pointed to Ram Khela Ja and Sita Khana La as cultural examples that should evolve in the current context of gender equality.
RPA Chief, S. Sengathir, in his welcome address, emphasised the sensitive nature of gender equality issues and advocated for a proactive approach by the police. He urged officers to adopt a preventive mindset in their work, reinforcing the need for effective prevention of gender-based violence.
