United Nations Population Fund collaborated with Institute for Social and Economic Change (Bangalore), Institute of Economic Growth (Delhi) and Tata Institute of Social Sciences (Mumbai) - to conduct an in-depth survey on ‘Building a Knowledge Base on Population Ageing in India (BKPAI)'. The two main components of the study are: (i) research using secondary data; and (ii) collecting primary data through sample surveys on socio-economic status, health and living conditions of the elderly that can be used for further research, advocacy and policy dialogue.

The primary survey was carried out in seven states - Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal - having a higher percentage of population in the age group 60 years and above compared to the national average.
