The Smart City Mission is an initiative of the Government of India to drive economic growth and to improve the quality of life in urban areas by enabling local development and harnessing technology.

In an attempt to establish a socially smart city where people centric interventions are steered through youth and community engagement programmes, UNFPA, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) joined hands in 2017.

The collaboration works to create a synergistic model for social interventions through community engagement, harnessing the energy of young people and applying innovations and good practices to existing government programmes and schemes.

'Making Bhubaneswar Socially Smart' provides an account of the collaborative venture. Through the stories of young people who have initiated change in their communities, it notes how the youth can play a crucial role in shaping urban development to be more inclusive and responsive to the needs of the urban poor, young people, women and the aged.
