Jaisalmer - Advancing health and choices

Publication

Jaisalmer, also known as the golden city of India, distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (the Great Indian Desert). It is the largest district in the state of Rajasthan with a population of about 0.6 million (Census 2011).

The golden glow of the district diminishes when we realise that it has a high incidence of home deliveries and a low percentage of antenatal and postnatal care (NFHS 2015-2016). Child marriages are rampant and the sex ratio is highly skewed (Census 2011). Jaisalmer suffers from acute shortage of human resource in the health sector particularly specialists at the secondary and tertiary healthcare level because of its remote location far from the capital city of Jaipur.

In the year 2013 UNFPA decided to take up the cudgels for women’s health in this region in partnership with the District Administration and State Health Department. This was a turning point for Jaisalmer.

State of World Population Report

For the first time, a United Nations report focuses on bodily autonomy - the power and agency to make choices about your body without fear of violence or having someone else decide for you. A serious lack of bodily autonomy has had far-reaching implications much beyond the profound harm to individual women and girls that include potentially depressing economic productivity, undercutting skills, and extra costs to health care and judicial systems.

Nearly half the women from 57 developing countries do not have the right to decide regarding their bodies including using contraception, seeking health care, or even on their sexuality.

Publication

The sex ratio at birth (SRB) in India has become more masculine in the recent decades. The imbalance in sex ratios stems from strong son preference combined with declining fertility, and the availability of and access to sonographic scanning during pregnancy. The practice of gender biased sex selection continues even though India has enacted laws banning the use of pre-natal diagnostic techniques for sex detection.
